What is Menopause?

Menopause is a completely natural and normal part of aging. You’re considered in menopause when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a period. This typically happens in your 40s or 50s, with an average age of 51. If it occurs prior to your 40s, it is referred to as premature ovarian failure or premature menopause.

In the years leading up to menopause, your reproductive system begins to slow down. Your ovaries produce less and less estrogen and eventually stop releasing eggs. This is known as perimenopause. Even with irregular cycles, there’s still a slight chance of pregnancy during this time.

Everyone’s reproductive system is unique, so each person’s journey through menopause is different, including age of onset and symptoms.

You Belong.

Pause is for any person who has (or has ever had) a period and is experiencing symptoms of menopause. It’s as simple as that. However you identify, you are welcome here.

Founder Story

Dr. Kara McElligott Park is changing the game when it comes to women’s health. Fed up with the barriers that exist between provider and patient in traditional healthcare setting, she wanted to make menopause care easy and accessible. A mom who experienced premature menopause while caring for a young child and managing a chronic illness, she understands how disruptive the symptoms of menopause can be. She empowers women by taking a collaborative approach to care.

A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a practicing OB/GYN for many years, Kara is here as a doctor and advocate, committed to helping you feel like yourself again.
